Root Beer

Short Description

It is often attempted to equate American root beer with certain drinks that are much better known in this country. It is certain, however, that the so-called "root beer" is neither a beer nor a malt beer. It is quite simply root beer! And that of the brand A&W has a very special cult status in the States. There it is not only drunk ice-cold as a refreshment in between, but also mixed with vanilla ice in the "Root Beer Float" or with rum in a long drink.

Long Description

Root Beer gets its name from the fact that it was made from the root bark of the sassafras tree in the 19th century. However, as this ingredient is carcinogenic, it was eventually banned and an aroma was developed that was very close to the original root bark in taste. The "beer" in the name comes from the fact that the drink gets a beer-like head when poured. Whereas root beer used to taste rather spicy and tart, it is now refreshingly sweet and, in the case of A&W Root Beer, has a gentle vanilla aroma.
